Whole30/Paleo on Vacation

Ok, Readers!! Since this is vacation season I thought I would share with you my tips for vacationing on Whole30 and/or Paleo.

My family and I went to the beach a couple of weeks ago. We stayed at the fabulous Caribe Resort (click on photo for more info).  We had a three bedroom / 3 Full Bath condo with a full kitchen, living room and laundry room.  (Home away from Home)!!

How did I stay compliant/”compliant-ish”, you ask?? Lots of prep and planning.  It really isn’t too difficult.  I packed up everything but the kitchen sink…or at least it felt like it.  Well, until I saw my brother’s car…he and his wife have small kids.  Those of you that have vacationed with small kids know you basically need a UHAUL.

We had 5 adults, 3 teenagers, a three year old, and a 7 month old. I knew there would be some meals that wouldn’t be as compliant as I wanted (but hey, it’s vacation).  I chose not to stress, just pick right back up with Whole30/Paleo the next meal.

I did pack a cooler and a box full of kitchen needs. I took my Pederson Farms Bacon (Whole30), and I also took my Aidell’s Chicken Apple Sausage (also Whole30).  I put both of these in the cooler with some Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips (so they wouldn’t melt in the car).   In my kitchen box I had:  Avocado Oil, Palm Shortening, Ghee, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Dill, Cilantro, Red Wine Vinegar, Sea Salt, Honey, Unsweetened Cocoa, Almond Flour, Baking Soda, Baking Powder, Mustard Powder, Paleo Baking Flour, Popsicle Molds, Lemon Juicer, Immersion Blender, Silicone Muffin Pans, Vanilla, and some jars.

Once we arrived and unpacked we headed off to the grocery store. We picked up eggs, lemons, onions, tomatoes, dill relish, mustard, bottled water, chicken, ground beef, nuts, fruit, and a few items for the non Whole30/Paleo peeps!

I was ready!!  Here was the plan…

Breakfast Everyday in the condo:  (I had the following)

Pederson Bacon, Aidell’s Chicken Apple Sausage, Eggs or whatever I could make with what I had.

Lunch Everyday in the condo:

I made homemade mayo and used it to make Chicken Salad. I also had eggs for boiled eggs, egg salad.  I had sausage and onions as well.  I also made Ranch Veggie Dip to eat with carrots

Dinner was sometime out and sometimes in.  This is were it got complicated.  There were a total of 10 of us…so it was difficult to meet everyone’s dietary needs.  I didn’t stay as compliant for dinners.  We went to several local restaurants.  I did order burgers (this gave me the option to toss the bun).  I tried not to order fried items, and limit bread.  However, we were on vacation so I did try some desserts at a couple of the local restaurants!!

Over all I was not 100% compliant but I feel good about the decision I made.  I did not get discouraged because I ate a non-compliant dinner.  I just picked right back up at breakfast the next morning with my compliant meal.  This used to be SO hard for me.  I have always been an all or nothing kind of girl.  Either every meal is compliant or I failed.  I have learned not to torture myself this way.  There are plenty of people who follow an 80/20 or 90/10 and are very successful.

So for those of you planning a vacation…don’t forget to pack the kitchen sink!!   If you eat more non-compliant foods than you planned.  Take the stairs, park far away from the restaurant, walk on the beach, swim, visit the gym.  Tomorrow is a new day!!  You’ve got this!!
